School Group Tour Guides (Docents)
Help guide children’s groups of all ages through the different sections of the museum. The Chandler Unified School District has incorporated Chandler’s history into their 3rd grade curriculum. Third grade students will learn Chandler’s history on our 1912 Tour.
There are three sections to our 1912 Tour– Morrison’s Store, Farmstead and Tenthouse. Docents dress in costume and interpret the past from the perspective of the shopkeeper, the farmer or the homesteader. Training consists of approximately 2 hours and each section is scripted.
Tours are approximately 45 minutes in length and vary from month to month. Most tours are in the morning and all take place on weekdays. If you are interested in being a Chandler Museum docent, call for more information. After training, a museum representative will call approximately 2 weeks prior to a museum tour for your availability. You can sign up for as many tours as your schedule allows.
Youth Program Volunteers
Assist the Museum Educator at events, workshops and classes that are geared toward children of all ages. Volunteer duties include supervising and assisting with children's activities and crafts.
Oral History Interviewer
Help the Chandler Museum record the oral histories of Chandler families to preserve the memories of the past. A basic 1 hour training session will take place where new interviewers will learn the ins and outs of interviewing. A workbook to take home will be provided with additional oral history information. The Chandler Museum will arrange for your interviews and will loan out our equipment to ensure correct documentation.
Oral History Transcriptionist
When oral histories are recorded, a transcript of the interview must be completed. This entails listening to each recording and typing the conversation into a word document. This volunteer task is one that can be worked on in the comfort of your own home as the Chandler Museum will loan out copies of our oral histories.
Membership Committee Member
The Chandler Historical Society is a non-profit organized funded in part by individual memberships. The Membership Committee can use your help to create new ways of recruiting new members. Work with the Membership Committee to create greater community support and increased museum awareness. Time commitment is approximately 4 hours/month.
